Watch Around Water is a water safety education and awareness program designed to help reduce drowning and aquatic injuries through active adult supervision. At Karratha Leisureplex, we are committed to providing a safe aquatic environment for all visitors and ask parents and guardians to follow our supervision requirements at all times.
Supervision Requirements
Children aged 0-5 years
- Must be accompanied into the aquatic area by a responsible person aged 16 years or older.
- Must remain within arm’s reach of their supervising adult at all times.
- If the child is in the water, the supervising adult must be in the water within arms reach at all times.
- Both the child and supervising adult must wear a Watch Around Water wristband, available from reception.
Children aged 6-9 years
- Must be accompanied into the aquatic area by a responsible person aged 16 years or older.
- Must remain within the direct line of sight of their supervising adult at all times.
- Supervising adults must maintain clear, constant visual contact and be able to respond immediately if assistance is needed.
Unsupervised children will be asked to leave the water until appropriate supervision is provided.
Supervision Ratios
To ensure the safety of all children, the following minimum supervision ratios apply:
- 1 adult to 2 children aged 0-5 years
- 1 adult to 5 children aged 6-9 years
These ratios are minimum requirements. Karratha Leisureplex reserves the right to implement stricter supervision measures where necessary to ensure patron safety.
Keeping Our Community Safe
Drowning can occur quickly and silently. Lifeguards are an important layer of safety, but they do not replace active parental or guardian supervision. By staying close, staying alert and keeping children within sight, you play the most important role in keeping them safe around water.
